[character]: Haji
[character history / background]: See wikipedia HERE and wikia HERE.

[character abilities]:
Haji is a chiropteran, a vampire-like being created by ingesting the blood of his Queen, Saya. As such he has super-human strength and reflexes, such as the ability to leap onto and over tall buildings, move almost faster than the human eye can track, and pulverize concrete with his fists. He heals from most wounds almost instantly, and can even re-attach limbs if severed (assuming he can get to them soon enough). He doesn’t require sleep or nourishment, although he can eat if it’s necessary to blend in.

Having not aged a day since he became Saya’s chevalier in 1883, he looks like an average twenty-five year-old male, save for his right hand which is frozen in its chiropteran form. As such it’s a razor-sharp claw and he keeps it wrapped in bandages to avoid suspicion and to protect others. He also conceals his wings, owing to the fact that they frightened Saya the first time she saw them, but he can use them at will if it becomes necessary. Unlike Diva’s chevaliers, Haji is never seen to completely change form, which is again owing to Saya’s initial fear of his chiropteran attributes. It can be inferred that he has such a form, but he suppresses it for her sake.

It is worth noting that in a straight test of strength, Haji tends to be weaker than Diva’s chevaliers. Again, this can be a result of more than a century’s worth of repression.

Other skills can be defined as “whatever Saya needs.” It’s his duty to care for her during their travels, so he’s butler, nurse, and concierge all in one. Even his most unique skill, as a virtuoso cellist, was a talent he learned from Saya as a boy - it was her attempt to bond with him and eventually he surpassed her in skill, although she’s seen as teasing him by pointing out his flaws when he plays..

In a fight, Haji will rely on a collection of small daggers that he can throw with deadly accuracy, his own physical strength and razor-sharp claws, and the case for his cello, which is reinforced to serve as both shield and bludgeoning tool. It also has a hidden compartment that contains Saya’s sword, which he picked up after the incident in Vietnam and held safe until she re-awakened. He continues to hold it whenever they travel.

[character personality]:
As a child, Haji was resentful of his position. He was a slave, bought by Joel and forced to be a companion to a snot-nosed brat of girl. He thought she was arrogant and selfish and demanding until the day when she discovered his past and showed him sympathy and compassion. From then on, his attitude towards her changed and as time, and many, many cello lessons passed they became friends and he became increasingly devoted to her. This devotion was only deepened when she accidentally made him her chevalier. While she feels guilt over it, Haji feels only relief, it has allowed him to stay by his beloved’s side for eternity. When it cones to his childhood, he can now view it with a sense of gratitude for the life he has now.

Haji’s devotion to Saya is absolute and complete. He will follow any order she gives, go with her wherever her path goes and place her safety above and beyond all others. Which isn’t to say that he doesn’t disagree with her from time to time, she tends to toss herself into death’s path and he has a few issues with that, but he’s the chevalier and she’s the Queen so while they may discuss some things, her orders alwaysstand. Saya’s even able to extract a promise from him, to kill her after Diva’s death, so that no other chiropterans can be made after them. This decision tears at him, at his instinct to protect her life above all else, but ultimately he agrees, making the promise and carrying the secret of it with him. Because she asked him to. What his Queen says, goes, regardless of how it wounds his heart.

Haji’s nature is given to introspection and instead to asking question after question, he simply observes the world around him and waits for answers to come. For example, as he grew and aged, Saya did not and it was over a decade and the witnessing of one of her wounds closing before he got around to asking Joel about it. Why did it take so long? Perhaps it was because there didn’t seem to be a threat in it, and therefore it wasn’t something that needed pursuing. He’s content to let things unfold, let them happen and it isn’t until Saya becomes impacted or involved that he bothers to act and even then it is simply to find otu what is in her best interest.

But he’s not without a sense of humor and although Saya is usually the only one who sees it, others have managed to crack his stoic exterior. Riku, for example, was someone person Haji showed genuine affection for, especially after he invited Haji to join a barbecue as a member of the family. And after Riku became Saya’s chevalier, Haji took the boy under his wing, giving him advice on how to adjust to his new state of being. Riku’s death deeply affected Haji, the bond they had formed meant a great deal to him as he’d come to regard the boy as a brother chevalier and at his death, Haji gives a rare display by attacking in anger, seeking vengeance for his loss. That the loss was Saya’s as well only hurts him more.

In general, he feels respect and trust for those Saya cares for, her adopted brothers, the members of Red Shield she’s close to, but it’s tinged with resentment that they have been able to give her something he has not, a family and a life without war. He notes that she smiles when she’s with them, something she rarely does with him and it saddens him that he can’t bring her that happiness. But that sadness is tinged with relief, because if he can’t make her happy, he is glad that she has those in her life that can.

In the end, his amusement, his pain, his resentments are all pushed away for his love and devotion to Saya. Whatever she needs him to be, he will be, protector, weapon, friend, or lover.
